Director – Tamata Reo
Self-Initiated Project | Aotearoa, NZ

Tamata Reo is a self-motivated project that explores how design can support Maori language learning through playful, interactive engagement. The objective was to create an activity-based learning tool that encourages the acquisition of kupu (words) through play, creativity and visual association.

At its core, Tamata Reo is a collection of custom-designed glyphs, developed as an educational resource to inspire positive attitudes towards te reo Maori. By blending art, typography, and game-based learning, the project offers an alternative, culturally grounded approach to language revitalisation — one that values curiosity, whakawhanaungatanga and visual storytelling.

The project has been recognised internationally and nationally for its innovation and cultural significance — winning in the IDA International Design Awards under Design for Society – Product and being formally documented in the New Zealand Katoitoi Archives as Design with Cultural Impact.
