Director – Tamata Reo
Self-Initiated Project | Aotearoa, NZ

Tamata Reo is a self-motivated design and photography project that seeks to influence positive attitudes towards te reo Maori by combining language, art, and visual storytelling.

The project centres on a custom collection of glyphs, developed as an educational tool to support Maori language learning through contemporary design. Each glyph is paired with contextual photography that visually anchors the meaning of selected kupu (words), helping users build a deeper and more intuitive understanding of the language through association and emotion.

Project Objectives
- To normalise and celebrate te reo Maori in everyday visual culture
- To support learners by visually reinforcing word meanings using art and imagery
- To explore how typography and photography can intersect as tools for cultural learning

Tamata Reo is an evolving body of work that bridges traditional language revitalisation efforts with modern design practice — aiming to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and support cultural pride among learners of all ages.
