Director – Tamata Reo
Self-Initiated Project | Tactile Learning Tool (Abacus Prototype)
This iteration of Tamata Reo is an extension of the original cubes project, evolving into a tactile abacus designed to support Maori language learning through physical interaction and sensory engagement.
The objective was to explore how form, touch and movement can enhance the learning experience — particularly for tamariki and those who benefit from kinaesthetic learning tools. Each bead or element on the abacus is inscribed with a custom glyph from the Tamata Reo collection, representing kupu (words) that can be counted, grouped and visually associated through play.
Rooted in kaupapa Maori and design for education, this prototype continues the central mission of Tamata Reo: to influence positive attitudes towards te reo Maori through art, design and inclusive learning environments. The abacus format invites learners to physically engage with language, reinforcing meaning through repetition, rhythm and interaction.
